Most don't know why I left Trufla in 2019. After being in a lawsuit for 6 years, it's time this story is shared. A press release providing an update on the claim has just been released here with a link to the public claim I filed:
Here's what the press release doesn't share. Prior to leaving Trufla Technology, I met with Sherif Gemayel several times to try to resolve this to no avail. I was so upset with how it was being handled that I decided to resign and sent Sherif a resignation letter (imagine how hard this was when I was a founder of Trufla and even picked the name of the company).
Realizing that I needed to protect my interests, I hired a lawyer and was upfront with Sherif about that. Upon disclosing I had hired a lawyer, I was immediately walked out of Trufla early.
Prior to being walked out of Trufla, I met Bruce Rabik at Rogers Insurance Ltd. who made it clear that they weren't happy I hired a lawyer.
Even after leaving Trufla, I wanted my lawyer to try to resolve it. I'm not a huge fan of using lawyers (in fact, that was the first time ever using a lawyer in a dispute). After spending several months trying to resolve it, Trufla decided to SUE me!!! They sued me personally, Dave Vass Consulting, and as many other entities I was a part of.
It was a bully tactic aimed at trying to intimidate me.
Not only did they sue me first, they actually ended up suing CostCertified (now called Bolster), a startup that I was building. Remember, I had NO income and 3 teenage kids. Most would consider this a very aggressive bullying tactic designed to crush me. (keep in mind, CostCertified had nothing to do with insurance, it was a completely different product in a different industry totally unrelated to Trufla).
But it didn't crush me. I hung in there and we managed to break every record in Alberta history for a seed round.
For years, Trufla has hid behind their aggressive lawyer and has tried to keep this private in the courts. I've been open the entire time to come to the table to resolve this in a fair manner but there's been no appetite and from my perspective, they have used their deeper pockets to try to drag this out and bleed me out.
The best way to handle bullying is to make it public. I have nothing to hide. While working for Trufla and Sherif and Bruce I did not do them any wrong.
Maybe public pressure will force Trufla to finally come to the table to resolve this. But, regardless, I'm prepared to go all the way to tell my story under oath in front of a judge.
I've now started a place to help people heal who have cancer. I want this to be put behind me. Maybe this story can end well and by resolving this issue, Trufla can actually end up doing some good for people who need it most.
P.s. I'm very well aware that most likely I'm going to be pressured through more legal tactics to shut up. But, moving forward, I'm going to keep this in the open.
